Textile structures are frequently used to create large stadia and arenas, and increasingly for sustainable urban environments. Several European countries have developed different design methods and rules.

COST Action TU1303 aims to improve the efficiency and sustainability of future membrane structures. Among its many objectives, European standardization is a major challenge, requiring the potential harmonization and dissemination of complex calculation methods that are required to simulate the specific behavior of textile structures. Working groups WG4: MATERIALS AND ANALYSIS and WG5: FROM MATERIAL TO STRUCTURE AND LIMIT STATES: CODES AND STANDARDIZATION of TU1303 are focusing on this goal.

These developments support the activities of CEN TC250 WG5, a European working group with the objective of writing a Eurocode dedicated to membrane structures (expected in 2024). The first milestone is set for mid-2015, with the completion of a Scientific and Policy Report (SAP Report) presenting the state of the art across Europe and proposing the principles for the initial  harmonized rules.

The early Eurocodes were essentially based on common practice. The rules developed in the emerging Eurocodes are expected to be derived from more formal reliability analysis-based methods, using statistics describing the materials and loading, and analysis tools focusing on numerical simulation.

Structural reliability analysis is a specialized technique that is essential for Engineers designing membrane structures to the Eurocodes, and for those involved in the development of Standards (including the Eurocode) and research.

On completing the Summer School, participants will have a good understanding how to calculate the structural reliability of membrane structures, and be aware of the issues associated with the drafting of a Eurocode for membrane structures.
